Below is the step-by-step process of obtaining the student visa:

1. Secure an offer letter from your academic institution

2. Initiate your Student Pass application via the EMGS website

3. Get the eVisa Approval Letter (eVAL) from the EMGS website and Visa with Reference (VDR) from your institution

4. Apply for Single Entry Visa (SEV) - only for students coming from countries that require a pre-arrival visa

Visa Requirement by Country

For citizens of ASEAN countries, student visas are not required if your study is less than one month, except for students from Myanmar.

However, if you are an ASEAN citizen studying in Malaysia for more than one month, you are required to apply for a student visa. Only citizens of Brunei and Singapore are exempted from this requirement, regardless of the duration of their stay.

If you plan to bring your family, they also need a Visa with Reference (VDR). Additional documents are required with their application, which is made through your institution.

If your parents want to accompany you during your study, they can apply for a social visit pass for up to 12 months or following the period of the student pass. 

They can also apply for ‘Multiple Entry Visa’ (MEV) for multiple entries to Malaysia and their home country during this duration.
